Irrfan Khan is a well-known Indian film actor who is best known for his work in Hindi films, though he has also appeared in Hollywood and British films. He was born on January 7, 1967, to a Pashto Muslim household in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Khan's mother, Begum Khan, was from the Hakim Tonk dynasty, while his father, Jagirdar Khan, was a tyre salesman from Khajuriya village near Tonk district.
Irrfan Khan's surname is derived from the Mongol and Turkish languages and means "great leader or king." Ghengis Khan's descendants in Central Asia converted to Islam and became the Moghuls, who ruled India for centuries until the arrival of the British.
Irrfan Khan was an accomplished cricketer. He was nominated for the CK Nayudu Tournament when he was in his early twenties. Due to a lack of cash, he was unable to participate in the tournament and instead focused on acting. He was awarded a scholarship to the National School of Acting in New Delhi in 1984. Irrfan Khan was given the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian accolade, for his contributions to the arts.
He won a National Filmfare Award for Best Actor and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Paan Singh Tomar in the critically acclaimed biographical athletic drama Paan Singh Tomar. His performance in the BAFTA Award-nominated romance "The Lunchbox" earned him international acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
Irrfan Khan appeared in The Namesake, The Darjeeling Limited, The Warrior, Slumdog Millionaire, I Love You, New York, Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man, Inferno, and Jurassic World on the international stage. His films have grossed over $3.643 billion at the global box office as of 2017. Irrfan Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018.
Since 1995, Irrfan Khan has been married to Sutapa Sikdar. His Hindu wife is from the Bramin caste. She is a screenwriter, a dialogue writer, and a film producer. Supari, Kahaani, Khamoshi: The Musical, Qarib Qarib, and Madaari are some of the most well-known films. Babil Khan and Ayaan Khan are the couple's two children.
